The floor area of new housing starts is part of the Statistics on Building Construction Starts published monthly by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It is the total floor area of newly started dwellings, and the Cabinet Office adopts it as leading series L5 in the Indexes of Business Conditions. Housing construction also spreads to demand for materials, equipment, furniture and home appliances. This page uses the seasonally adjusted series published by the ministry, shown with moving averages and year-on-year change. Viewing it together with the number of units also shows changes in the size of each dwelling.
