The Leading Index (CI) of the Indexes of Business Conditions is published monthly by Japan’s Cabinet Office. It combines indicators that tend to move ahead of the business cycle, such as new job offers, real machinery orders, floor area of new housing starts and the consumer confidence index. With 2020 set to 100, it summarizes the size and direction of changes in the leading series. It is said to tend to move several months ahead of business-cycle peaks and troughs, so viewing it alongside the Coincident Index can offer clues to turning points. This page uses the values published by the Cabinet Office as they are, shown with moving averages and year-on-year change. This site does not forecast future values.
